Speeding Accident Statistics in Indiana

Speeding is one of the leading causes of car accidents in Indiana. While the number of drunk driving accidents continues to remain consistent in Indiana, accidents caused by drivers who were driving too fast for the speed limit or existing weather and road conditions continues to remain high. In 2018, more than 19,000 accidents related to speeding were recorded across Indiana.

According to the Indiana University Public Policy Institute, there were 19,604 speeding-related accidents recorded in the state in 2018.  These included accidents that involved motorists driving above the posted speed limits for Indiana roads, as well as accidents involving motorists driving too fast for the existing road, traffic and weather conditions.

Speeding accounts for a disproportionate number of traffic accidents in Indiana.  In 2018, 9% of all traffic collisions were linked to speeding, while 20% of all fatal traffic accidents involved speeding. Speed-related accidents are typically high- impact accidents, which result in catastrophic traffic injuries and fatalities.

Your chances of being involved in a car accident are much higher when you are speeding, compared to driving at normal speeds. In 2018, 96% of injuries in car accidents were linked to speeding drivers, while the injury rate was 93% for accidents not involving speeding. Motorcyclists are much more likely to speed than motorists.

There also seems to be a link between speeding and failure to wear restraints, like seatbelts. Between 2014 and 2018, motorists in speed-related accidents were less likely to be buckled in, compared to motorists in accidents that did not involve speeding. Speeding is also often linked to alcohol- related car accidents. A person driving under the influence of alcohol is much more likely to ignore speed limits, or road conditions that require him to drive at lower speeds.

Certain categories of motorists are much more likely to be involved in speeding- related accidents. For instance, younger motorists and male drivers are more likely to be involved in speeding accidents.

To avoid accidents caused by speeding, make sure that you leave for your destination well in advance. Avoid driving under the influence of alcohol: it inhibits your judgment and enables dangerous driving behaviors, like speeding.
