|Poor visibility, slippery roads and other factors can make driving a special challenge during winter. The Automobile Association of America is warning motorists about safe driving and accident prevention this winter season.
Firstly, make sure that your car is in good shape to handle the challenges of driving in cold weather. Get your vehicle serviced regularly, and especially before heading out on a long distance trip. Your tires must be properly inflated.
Avoid warming your car up in your garage or any enclosed driving space.
Avoid using cruise control when you are driving on slippery or wet surfaces.
Fuel line freeze-up is a real risk during winter. The tank or fuel itself will not freeze, but when the tank is close to empty, condensation can set in, freezing the lines and making it impossible for you to start the car. Keep your tank at half full levels, and maintain these levels to prevent the gas line freezing up and leaving you stranded.
Winter driving can be more challenging when you are on a long distance trip. Make sure that your car is prepared to take the challenges of driving long distances in treacherous conditions beforehand. A pre-trip check is an absolute must.
Be sure to read up on weather reports on your route, Plan a shorter, less challenging route, if possible.
Always keep essentials stocked in your car. These can include torchlight, cells, flares, snacks, drinking winter, jumper cables, a blanket, gloves and hats. Keep a cell phone that has the AAA number to contact in case of an emergency. Extra washer fluid is always helpful. Keep a fully stocked first aid kit in your car at all times.
If you are stuck in snow, stay in the car – it will provide much-needed protection till help arrives. If the car gets stuck in snow, do not tire yourself out trying to move it.
Try to avoid driving in snowy weather if you can avoid it. Even the best of drivers can get stuck in the snow, and the poor visibility can easily cause a motorist to get lost.
Keep your speeds low. Skidding, and rolling over are real risks when the roads are wet or icy, exposing you and your loved ones to the risk of injury.
If you have been involved in an accident, talk to Indianapolis injury lawyers at Montross Miller and discuss your claim.
