Anesthesia Risks and Complications: What’s Normal, What’s Not, and When to Ask Questions

Posted in: Medical Malpractice | Dec 23,2025

Waking up after anesthesia can feel unsettling, even when your procedure went smoothly. Many people experience lingering grogginess, nausea, chills, or a sense that something just feels “off,” and those sensations often lead to questions about anesthesia risks in the hours and days after surgery. If you worry a complication is developing or that an error led to an anesthesia injury, you deserve clear guidance on what typically improves with time, what warrants a call to your care team, and what should prompt urgent or emergency care and raise questions of medical malpractice.

What’s Normal After Anesthesia, and What’s Not?

Many patients experience short-term anesthesia side effects such as grogginess, dry mouth, mild nausea, a sore throat, chills, or temporary confusion. Your care team should tell you what to expect, how long symptoms usually last, and what should trigger an urgent follow-up.

Shivering and Chills: Common, Uncomfortable, and Sometimes Risky

Many patients experience post-anesthesia shivering, which can increase strain on the cardiovascular system, especially in higher-risk patients. You can ask your team what they plan to use for warmth management, pain control, and nausea prevention, because comfort strategies often overlap with safety strategies. An American Society of Anesthesiologists report says acetaminophen may reduce chills and shivering.

Warning Signs That Need Immediate Medical Attention

Some symptoms call for urgent evaluation. If you experience severe trouble breathing, bluish lips, chest pain, fainting, or an inability to stay awake, call 911 or seek emergency care.

Seek immediate help for uncontrolled vomiting, a rapidly escalating fever, or muscle rigidity. After spinal or epidural anesthesia, take severe headaches seriously, especially when they worsen upright. After nerve blocks, report any new weakness, numbness, or loss of function without delay.

Additionally, there are other practical red flags that can worry patients and families after anesthesia and deserve attention if they escalate or don’t improve.

  • Breathing that feels “different” than normal for you. If you can’t speak full sentences or feel persistent chest tightness, treat it as urgent, especially if you have sleep apnea, lung disease, or use opioid pain medication.
  • Confusion that worsens instead of clearing. Mild fogginess can happen, but increasing disorientation, agitation, or an inability to recognize people or surroundings should prompt emergency evaluation.
  • Swallowing problems, choking, or repeated coughing after vomiting. These symptoms can signal aspiration risk, which needs immediate medical attention.
  • Pain that doesn’t match expectations. Surgical pain can feel intense, but your team should still respond when pain spikes suddenly, feels unusual, or comes with fever, shortness of breath, weakness, or fainting.
  • A “gut feeling” that something isn’t right. If your symptoms don’t match your discharge instructions, call the number you received for after-hours concerns or seek care. You know your baseline best.

If you feel unsure, you can start with the surgeon’s office, the anesthesia department, or the after-hours line on your discharge paperwork. If symptoms feel severe or fast-moving, skip the phone call and seek urgent care immediately.

Why Some Anesthesia Complications Happen Even With Good Care

Unfortunately, anesthesia can involve risks even when a careful team does everything right. Every person metabolizes medications differently. Your airway anatomy, underlying health conditions, hydration status, and the type or length of procedure all influence recovery.

Some anesthesia complications arise because the body reacts unpredictably to medications or physiologic stress. Others develop because the surgery itself triggers inflammation, pain, nausea, fluid shifts, or changes in blood pressure. You may also feel “behind” in recovery if you didn’t sleep well in the hospital, you stopped eating and drinking normally, or you’re using pain medications that cause sedation or nausea.

That said, you should never dismiss worsening symptoms just because someone told you anesthesia often causes grogginess. Your care team should take concerns seriously, reassess you when symptoms don’t improve, and issue clear return precautions.

When Anesthesia Complications May Involve Medical Malpractice

A scary outcome alone doesn’t prove negligence; the question is whether the team met the standard of care. Some anesthesia risks exist even with excellent care. A medical malpractice claim becomes viable when a provider falls below accepted standards and that lapse causes harm.

These cases often involve incomplete pre-op assessment, missed high-risk history, dosing mistakes, dangerous interactions, inadequate monitoring, delayed response to airway problems, poor handoffs, or unsafe discharge decisions without clear criteria.

In some cases, clinicians can also mishandle post-anesthesia complications. If you suspect negligence, document your symptoms, follow-up visits, medications, and time missed from work. Save discharge instructions and any portal messages. Clear records help evaluate whether you can recover losses through a medical malpractice claim.
